I’ve probably mentioned this before but, I am a vegetarian – I went veggie at the start of uni. I watched Cowspiracy and that was it – meat and fish were dead to me, (I guess they’re dead to everyone but you get what I’m saying).
Of course, nowadays you can go out to eat pretty much anywhere and find some great vegetarian and vegan options, but one thing I do miss about carnivore life is being able to just open a menu and know I can eat everything on it. No need to search out the little ‘v’ next to a dish or read through every item, doing a process of elimination to find what you can actually eat.
If you can’t be arsed with the level of cognitive engagement required to sift through a menu, like Indian food and love a good cocktail then Bundobust needs to be your next table reservation.
Bundobust is a great spot for lunch or dinner. Similar to Wagas, they have long family tables which creates a very laid back and fun atmosphere. There are vintage posters dotted around the walls, with what I imagine are 70s/80s Indian pop culture icons, and other colourful decoration.
Described as a ‘Gujarati street food’ restaurant, food is served in take away style bowls with plates and cutlery that are actually made out of plant materials that are fully compostable. Everything has a casual feel and sharing is very much the aim of the game.
Everything on the menu is vegetarian and most of the options are either already vegan too or can be made so. We ordered the ‘combo for 2’, (which will easily feed 3!), which has smacked khakri; sprout bhajis; bundo chaat; festive dhal & rice; chole saag and – my absolute favourite – paneer tikka. Let’s be real, paneer is a winner in its own, but the smokey barbecue flavour with the red pepper ketchup & spinach chutney really makes this a true champion. This dish literally makes me like mushrooms, (and I hate mushrooms!).
If the food isn’t enough, you absolutely will be won over by the drinks. Bundobust specialises in craft beers which they make in their very own brewery. But if, like me, you cannot stand beer, order a Dirty Lopez cocktail… You’ll thank me later.
Sorry Londoners, but Bundobust is exclusively in the North for now with locations in Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester. The first Bundobust I ever went to was during my time in Leeds at uni. I’d say the vibe of the restaurant there, whilst still casual and great for sharing, is a lot cosier than the Manchester location. It’s also reasonably priced: we had 4 cocktails between us and alongside the food, (which we couldn’t finish!), all came to £33 each. Whilst they take walk-ins, I would definitely book ahead. We went for an early dinner on Saturday night and the place was heaving. Find them here and you can make your Manchester reservation here.
