Exploring: Mykonos, Greece

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, the girls trip is my all time favourite genre of holiday. The ‘who’s going in the shower first?’ conversation, each finding a mirror that you’ll claim as your own for the duration of the trip, always planning to take good pics., but always running too late to get any. Honestly, these holidays will forever be some of my favourite memories. This year, memories were made on the Greek island of Mykonos…

The first thing people tell you is that Mykonos is expensive… and they are right. I would say this trip was definitely more expensive than Ibiza but we were not trying to be frugal so it’s likely you could do it on a budget if you really wanted to.

You absolutely need to get a rental car if you want to be able to explore the island properly. Taxi’s, (which you can order on iMove and you will almost always get some sort of decked out Sprinter), are expensive and just inconvenient. None of us had ever driven in Europe before so we decided to get an automatic to makes things a little easier, which would be my top tip. Another top tip would be to avoid booking the cheapest car you can get – we ended up with a dusty tin can who we named ‘Sketty’. She must have been at least 15 years old and it was hilarious having this car valet parked. The real issue was the uneasy feeling of hill starts and general drive experience, so definitely a lesson learnt.

We ate the best tenderstem broccoli I have ever eaten in all my years of life at Zuma, (€53 each), had a more low-key affordable meal at Kastro’s, (€34 each), and a not-so-afforable dinner at Buddha Bar, (€103 each). That being said, I had black cod here for the first time ever and I fear my life will never be the same. Now, the Mykonian institution that is Scorpios really did not do it for me! The location is stunning, watching the sunset was magical and the prawn tacos were delicious. I felt the vibe was a bit mid but maybe if I were super into house music I’d feel differently. One thing about me, I’m going to find somewhere to shake a leg to music I enjoy and so we headed to Mykonos Old Town where we found Semeli Bar. I think this is somewhat affiliated with ToyRoom and the music was givinnngggg. We got free drinks all night, (and by free drinks I mean bottles of Grey Goose all night), a table and a super fun night out.

Frying ourselves in the sun at the beaches was high on the agenda and Paradise Beach was our first stop. Annoyingly, you can’t take any personal food or drink in with you. I refuse to pay for water so snuck some in at the bottom of my beach bag which they didn’t search so that could be a shout if you really fancy taking some snacks. Beds were affordable, (like €20 each or something), which was a far cry from the Nammos Beach Club beds at Psarrou beach. This is the boujie beach that Nammos Village is on, which is a luxury shopping complex leading down to the water, where you can spot yachts, designer drip and the egos of men that have nothing going for them except their black Amex cards. Nammos Beach Club looks stunning but for €350 for bed rental only, we scooted ourselves further down the beach to the actually reasonably priced sun beds. This was the only day where we got an understanding of the wind that people often talk about in Mykonos but it didn’t stop us from enjoying our time on the beach.

For affordable beach clubs, (so not Nammos, Zuma or Cavo Tagoo), we opted for Kalua Beach Club. A 3rd row bed was €120 for bed rental and minimum spend which got us some iced cappucino freddos, some Hugo Spritzes and a sushi platter. This was definitely good value for money but not a high energy beach club, though we were glad for the relaxed vibe after a heavy night.

On our final full day, we walked around Mykonos Old Town in the daylight for the first time, just wandering around the white washed streets, picking up souvenirs and grabbed brunch. That night we pulled ourselves away from Semeli Bar and headed to Bao’s Cocktail Bar, then Negrita, then Interni and finally to Tabu. Girliesssss, please listen to me when I tell you, if you go out in Mykonos, do not dare pay for a drink – you will get them for free!

Our time in Mykonos eventually came to an end. We dropped of Sketty, (good riddance!), and made our way to the airport. Purses were empty, livers were knackered but our hearts were buzzing.
