When I think of a Michelin starred restaurant, I immediately assume that I won’t be able to afford it, I assume I’d feel out of place and I also assume the food portions will be more suited to a 2-year old. All these assumptions were shattered when we visited Varoulko Seaside in Athens.

Firstly, the setting is stunning. It sits overlooking the harbour with tables on the balcony which I can imagine is the perfect scene for a balmy summer evening. Our table was right by the door so we could see the twinkling lights dancing across the sea.
The vibe was perfect. It wasn’t stuffy nor pretentious, but the service was very well choreographed. From the host greeting you downstairs, putting you in the lift and another meeting you when you reached restaurant level. A waiter came over and explained each dish and checked up to ensure everything was to our liking.
Now, to the food. I don’t think I have ever eaten such a delicious meal in all my 28 years of life. Every element was on the plate for a reason and brought something to the dish, with the flavours perfectly balanced. The portions left us perfectly satisfied. I think about the cassis sorbet that I had with my dessert OFTEN.
Finally, and probably the most important thing, it was very affordable! I know that’s a relative term but 2 starters, 2 mains, 2 desserts, 2 post dinner herbal teas and a bottle of still water came to a total of €144. That doesn’t include alcohol as my Mum and I don’t really drink so if you were to add wine it would be pricier.
I recommend this restaurant with my entire chest! I would recommend booking in advance and ask for an outside table in summer or a table by the window in winter.
